The Kabani, also called Kabini or Kapila, is a river in southern India It originates in the Wayanad District of Kerala state by the confluence of the Panamaram River and the Mananthavady River . It is fed by four important tributaries the Panamaram the Manatoddy the Babali and the Noolpuzha. The Manantody has its origin in the Tondarmudi Malai of the western Ghats at an elevation of about +1500 m. and flows towards east. The Panamaram river which rises from Lakkidi in the Western Ghats at an altitude of about +1350 m joins the Manantoddy river 7 km north of Panamaran. The Karamana thodu, the Venniottupuzha the Karapuzha and the Narasipuzha are the important`tributaries of the river. Below the confluence of the Panamaram River with the manantoddy the river is known as the Kabani. Near the State’s border the Bavalipuzha joins the Kabani River and from this point the main river follows . The State border for about 12 km and then turns north and flows into the Karnataka. The Noolpuzha another important tributary originates from the eastern border of Wynad and flows towards north to join the Kabani river outside the Kerala State boundary. Close to the town of Sargur it forms the huge Kabani Reservoir. The backwaters of the Kabani reservoir are very rich in wildlife especially in summer when the water level recedes to form rich grassy meadows.
