Socially conscious and responsible tourism often shortened to " Social Tourism" is an umbrella term that refers to a set of ideas and concepts that are a new form of an enlightened and mature approach to tourism. Social Tourism encompasses responsible, sustainable, managed, secure tourism concepts, while adding volunteerism as the driving force. The core idea is to promote an experience for the traveller that actually involves the communities that they travel through rather than being an exploitive and destructive effect. This allows socio-economically limited communities to retain their culture while serving the greater need of upliftment of society. This has been the domain of NGOs and other politically motivated entities, but this has changed with private companies coming in to provide better facilities and experiences for both the traveller and the local community.
Responsible Tourism Mission introduced this innovative concept to bring the martial, ritual and performing arts practitioners of Kerala into the limelight by directly connecting them to the tourism industry and public.
