Sri Kshetra Kanakagiri, surrounded by a fort, is the only Siddakshetra in South India. It is regarded as one of the holy Jain centers with stone edicts and basadis (Jain shrines), going back to 11th century. It has the Nishadi Caves, the Samadhi Mantapas and inscriptions and footprints from ancient times. Sri Kshetra Kanakagiri is also known as Nakayama Shaila, meaning heaven’s crest while the word ‘kanaka’ actually means golden and the ancient name for this pilgrim center was ‘Suvarnagiri’. Located near Maleyur in Chamarajanagar District in Karnataka, the area is home to dense forests with sandalwood trees.
