Mamara Guhai is a religious cave temple located at the foothills of Thiruvannamalai. Popularly known as the cave where Sri Ramana Maharshi meditated for six years, Mamara Guhai is of great religious significance to the locals. Literally meaning mango tree cave, this temple gets its name from a mango tree overlooking it.Easily accessible by a short walk up the hill, Mamara Guhai has numerous idols within the temple dedicated to various Gods and Goddesses. Lord Shiva is seen in the form of Vishwanathar or Lord of the World. There are numerous other idols kept here that belong to Saptha Kannigagal, Ganesha, Nageshwara, Narasimha, Rajarajeswari, and Annapoorneshwari, who is seen with a ladle and pot in her hands. A five headed Hanuman is a rare idol found here.Portraits of Sri Ramana Maharshi and Sri Rangacharya are also found in the temple.One can also pay a visit to the more popular Annamalaiyar Temple, where Lord Shiva is worshipped as a fire lingam.
