The presiding deity of the temple is Arangulanathar. There was a staunch woman Shiva devotee, Perianayaki by name. While she went to the temple with her parents, she suddenly disappeared. A voice was heard that she had joined Lord Shiva. Nagarathar community people regarded her as Ambica and raised a separate shrine for her. From the very appearance, it could be concluded that this shrine was constructed in later days. The idol of Lord Nataraja is very beautiful. The blue print (Padimam) is in the National Museum, Delhi. The Rajagopuram – Main Tower – was built during the Pandya period blessing the devotees. Worshipping Tiruchitrambalam Udayar in the temple is equal to worshipping Lord Viswanatha in Kasi. All the 12 Zodiac signs – Rasis - with their relative Devadas-deities are drawn with herbal colours on the roof of the Vasantha Mandapam.
