The Cathedral was built on designs made by architect N. Chagin. It was built between 1890–1892, with the financial support of Tzar Alexander III of Russia. The cathedral was built on the site of a previous church built in 1774 on designs made by F.B. Rastrelli. The cathedral was badly damaged during WWII and also during the Soviet occupation. After Latvia regained its independence, the church was returned to the Orthodox congregation and the cathedral was restored for the next ten years, it being finished in 2003. The cathedral has nine bells in the bell-tower with the largest bell weighing 830 kg.[1][2] Particularly striking are the golden domes decorated with blue stripes.
