Thriumoorthy Dam (also spelt as Thirumurthy) is 20 kms from Udumalpet on the highway from Palani to Coimbatore. The dam has been constructed adjoining the Thirumurthy Hill. This scenic dam is close to the Amalingeswarar Temple; close by are a perennial stream and a waterfall. Legend has it that thousands of years back, Athari Maharishi and his wife Anushiyadevi lived here. They were a devout couple and moved by their devotion, Lord Shiva, Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu (Thiru Moorthigal) came here in disguise to test their devotion. The couple was overwhelmed when they appeared and offered them homage. However, the Thiru Moorthigal refused to recognize their offerings instead demanding that the offerings should be made by Anushiya Devi in the nude. She accepted their stipulation; with the strength of her devotion she transformed the Thiru Moorthis into three-year-old babies and fed them. Acknowledging the power of her devotion, Shiva, Brahma and Vishnu – the Thiru Moorthis - blessed the couple and that is why this area is called Thirumoorthi hills.
