Vayalur Sri Subramaniyaswamy Temple or Kumara Vayalur Murugan Temple is in a picturesque village near Tiruchirappalli city (Trichy), Tamil Nadu. It is surrounded by green paddy fields and lofty coconut groves. Built in the 9th century CE by the Cholas, this famous temple was revived and renovated with the help of the Tamil Harikata (storytelling tradition) doyen, Kripananda Variyar, an ardent Muruga devotee. There is a story told about a Chola king who came to this spot in search of water to quench his thirst after a long hunt. He found a piece of sugarcane with three branches and tried to wring it to drink the juice. The sugarcane broke and blood began to flow from it. He dug the ground and found a Shivalingam. The king then built a temple on the spot.
