This 8th century temple in Aihole is dedicated to Lord Shiva, and is one of the famous and sacred temples in the vicinity. The main sanctum ‘Shikhara’ is in typical Chalukyan style while the temple is in the Rekha-Nagara style of architecture with Mukha Mantapa and Antrala as chambers of the temple. The ceiling in the ‘garbh griha' is embellished with an image of Lord Shiva’s Nataraja Avatar while the walls are decorated with exquisite carvings. You can also find carvings of Lord Vishnu’s Avatar and Narashima decorating the exteriors of the temple. The exotic interiors and the exteriors of this temple attract many tourists, and is a paradise of history and art buffs.
