St. Thomas Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, Palayur is located at Palayur (also spelt Palayoor), in Thrissur district in Kerala on the west coast of India. According to tradition, it was established in post 9th century [1] It is one of the oldest churches in India of 10th century. The Palayur Church in Chavakad was one of the Chapel of St. Mary's Cathedral, Arthat(Palur-Chattukulangara Church)Which was founded by St thomas Apostle at Judda kunnu(Jew Hill) in AD 52. The palayur church of chavakad was dedicated in the name of St Kuriakose,a 4th century saint.Later this church was rededicated in the name of St Thomas. It is mentioned in Memoirs of Claudius Bukhanan that there is the chapel of Kuriakose Sahda of Arthat Orthodox church in Chavakad. Due to the rift between Syrians and Romo-Syrians in St. Mary's Cathedral, Arthat in 18thcentury,under the leadership of Shakthan Thampuran a "lot" was conducted and the mother church went to the syrians and the chapel to the Romo Syrians. Palayur Chapel was originally a small Church. But substantial improvements around it were carried out during the 17th century by Reverend Fenichi, as necessary, without sacrificing the main sanctity of the place.
