It is one of the 108 Durga shrines and the last one established by Parasurama. The divinity here is Durga Devi (Bhagawathy) .This temple was once a campaign centre of art and traditional happenings of Malabar in the long past. There are sub immortals of Ganapathy and Dakshinamoorthy. For Ayyappan there is a shrine outdoor the grounds of Durga Devi temple. The legend utters, upon the amends of Parasuraman in Threthayuga (a particular ancient period), Durga Devi appeared and said that she would be present in Theertharoopam on the Chothi star day and Vavu (full moon day) to bless the followers. After this, Parasuraman established the temple. In the early period of the temple there remained apt everyday ceremonies. Later the rituals were assumed break for lack of treasuries or some other motives. The people of the region started feeling the effect of abandon to the shrine. Hearing this, the sovereigns at the time, Perumallors, came on the sight and organized for daily rituals. Soon the monument jumped into the situation of Mahakshetra (big temple). Later, Zamorins took responsibility of the temple, modernized and modified the edifice to the present state. Even today the temple is coped by Zamorin family. The main anniversary here is the Vavu Bali when thousands assemble to execute the ancestral obsequies. On this day, the sea is found to be astonishingly quiet as if easing the religious adherences.
