ABOUT
Willingdon Island is a most beautiful locations in the Kochi area.The largest artificial island in India, which forms part of the city of Kochi named after a former Viceroy. It is a major commercial centre and has some of the best hotels in the city. It is also home to the Kochi Naval Base of the Indian Navy, the Central Institute of Fisheries Technology and the Port of Kochi. It handles millions of tonnes of carriage every year. The island is connected to the mainland by the Venduruthy Bridge. The ferry ride is loved by all and boat trips around the island give one a spectacular view of the place
HISTORY
The legend says that Robert Bristow who was the chief protagonist and engineer for the project had bought the first building on the island but at present the entire land is under Cochin Port Trust and Indian Navy. This island is created during the construction of modern Kochi Port in the year 1936 with the soil trench while deepening the Vembanad Lake for the new Kochi Port.
