The annual Ayilyam festival at the Sree Nagaraja Swami temple at Vettikode in Alappuzha District attracts a large number of pilgrims. The annual festival at this ancient shrine dedicated to serpent gods is also known as Ayilya Mahotsavam, which falls in the Malayalam month of Kanni (roughly September / October). The celebrations commence seven days prior to the Ayilyam asterism. These days are marked by special rituals. A highlight of the festival is a ceremonial procession from the temple to Meppallil Illam, an ancient Brahmin home. Sarpabali, a ritual to propitiate the serpent gods, is held in the evenings. The festival will come to close with the daily rituals and Panchamritha Nivedhyam (holy food offered to the deity as part of worship).
