This is a stunning wildlife reserve in Kerala located within a close proximity to the astounding Idukki Arch Dam,there is the extra benefit of enjoying the amazing panorama of the dam site. The Wildlife Sanctuary is spread over an area of 77 square kilometers and is home to a large number of species, this wildlife habitat is among the most facinating and desired after wildlife sanctuaries in Kerala. In addition to the natural charm and appeal of Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary, visitors can also see the massive Elephants, Tigers, Sambar Deer, Wild Dogs, Jungle Cats, Wild Boar, and several other mammals within this sanctuary. The reserve also serves as an ideal home to exotic species of snakes like Cobra, Viper, Kratis, and several other non-poisonous species also spotting birds like Malabar Grey Hornbill, Grey Jungle Fowl, Woodpeckers, Bulbuls, and lot more
The sanctuary notified in 1976 is a part of Nagarampara Reserve Forests. The area was previously part of Kottayam Forest Division and forms the catchment area of Periyar River and caters to ldukki Hydel Project. The total extent of the sanctuary is 105.364sq.km which includes 33sq.km water body of the Idukki Reservoir. The sanctuary is a fragmented part of the High Range forests separated from the main tract of vegetation extending between Munnar Hills which includes Eravikulam National Park, Shola National Parks, Kurinjimala Sanctuary and Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary and Periyar Tiger Reserve. The entire sanctuary forms the catchment area of the Idukki Hydro Electric Project.The forest surrounding the reservoir forms a conducive habitat for wildlife and is rich in biodiversity.
One of best ways to sight animals is boating in the reservoir. Herds of elephants and other animals are seen at the banks as it is the major water source within the sanctuary.
Temperature is in between 13 degree C to 29 degree C. March and April is the hottest period of the year. Except in month of January to April the climate is usually cool and humid with the heavy rainfall.
September to October is considered as the ideal time to visit Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary

Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary is 2 KM to the south of Painavu, the District headquarters. The nearest township is Cheruthoni, 2 km northeast of Vellappara. 40 kms from Thodupuzha.The nearest Railway stations are Kottayam, which is 106km; Ernakulam 120km; and Alwaye 103km from the sanctuary.
