Idukki Dam is the one of the largest dams in Asia it is a double curvature Arch dam constructed across the Periyar River between the two Kuravan and Kurathi hills.It is called as power house of kerala.It supports a 780 MW hydroelectric power station in Moolamattom.The reservoir has over 2 billion tons of water contained in three dams-Idukki, Cheruthoni and Kulamavu. Idukki dam is used to store the water and remaining two are meant to route it to the powerhouse.
The possibility of constructing a dam at Idukki for Power Generation based report was submitted to the Government of Travancore by W.J.John in1932.In 1969 April 30 the construction of this Dam was initiated.In 1973 Storage of water in Idukki reservoir was commenced.The Project was commissioned by then Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi in 1976.
