St. Michael’s church, Thathampally is one of the most prominent land mark in Alappuzha town, whose distinguished history is written in golden letters. The church is the result of the highly spiritual Christian community in the area as also a dream fulfilled by our own ancestors. It was a universally accepted truth then, and even now, that wherever the community members stayed together, they also built churches. Our forefathers also maintained that golden rule and the church is a living example of that rich heritage. The church has a history and ancestry of more than 600 years. The late Shri. Mathu Tharakan was a very renowned industrialist in erstwhile State of Travancore. His Highness Karthika Thirunal, Captain Delanai and the State Governors brought to King’s attention Mathu Tharakan’s unstinted loyalty towards the king and the huge financial contribution made to the King’s treasury. Shri. Mathu Tharakan was given an audience by the King, honoured and titled him as “Tharakan”. An ardent believer and visionary, he contributed by money and reputation to build up the area and strengthened the church.
