St. Thomas Mar Thoma Church situated near the Arthootty Junction is among the first Mar Thoma churches of Kottayam. Founded in 1901, the parish is in the jurisdiction of the Kottayam Kochi Diocese. St. Thomas Mar Thoma Church, Kottayam, popularly known as 'Pazhayachantha Palli'(Old Bazaar Church), is a parish of great significance in the Malankara Marthoma Syrian church. It was established by Punnathura Chandapilla Catanar of the Thazhathu family at a time when the church faced a great crisis in not having a shepherd who could claim the lineage of the Apostles. It was Chandapilla Catanar, lovingly called Thazhath Achen by his flock, who overcame this crisis by having the consecration of Titus I solemnised in Cheriyapally by the Bishops from the Independent Syrian Church of Thozhiyoor. The church has been blessed over the years by the sincere services of twenty seven vicars with ThazhathAchen being the first vicar.
