In kerala, Neyyar Sanctuary is a popular wildlife Sanctuary and protection zone in Trivandrum. The Agasthyamalai 1890 metres high, lies here. It is the home of variety of plant species especially medicinal plants and orchids. Animals like Elephants, bears, Nilgiri ibex etc...and variety of reptiles like the python, viper and the flying snake inhabit the forestland. Boating , Trecking and Crocodile watching are some of the interesting activities possible here. The most adventurous thing here is the safari at the Lion Park. Trekking to the Agasthya Peak is possible only in summer with permission from the Forest Department. The mean summer temperature is around 35 degrees Celsius and the winter being around 16 degree Celsius.
Although it was declared as a sanctuary in 1958, not much was done about wildlife conservation, until 1985, when a separate wildlife wing was set up and as a result, conservation efforts have gathered momentum. Neyyar Wild Life Sanctuary, is one of the well known natural attractions near Thiruvananthapuram. Situated on the south-eastern side of theWestern Ghats, Neyyar Wild Life Sanctuary is home to more than 39 species of mammals, 176 species of birds, 30 species of reptiles, 17 species of amphibians and 40 species of fishes. This sanctuary is also known for its crocodile farm which was set up in the year 2007.
This sanctuary has a substantial natural vegetation cover. The diversity of its flora makes the sanctuary an ideal gene pool preserve. There are 39 species of mammals, including tiger, leopard, sloth bear, elephant, sambar, barking deer, bonnet macaque, Nilgiri langur and Nilgiri tahr. 176 species of birds, 30 species of reptiles, 17 species of amphibians and 40 species of fishes are reported from the sanctuary.
The mean summer temperature is around 35 degrees Celsius and the winter being around 16 degree Celsius. The average rainfall from the Southwest monsoon between May and July and the Northeast monsoon between October and November, is about 2800 mm. The tourist season here is between the months of November and March.
