Easter is celebrated by all Christians in Idukki with the same significance and passion as in the other parts of Kerala and the world. It begins with Lent, a 40 days fasting and self-punishment. Then on the Holy Thursday, the ritual of Jesus Christ’s Last Supper and washing of feet are done. The rite of Paschal bread is held at every home. A ‘cross cake’ is cut into pieces and distributed among family members. On Good Friday day, churches remain empty. After the afternoon services, a bitter drink is served to everyone to taste. The whole Saturday is a day of sorrow. At night, by ten, the church becomes ready to observe Easter Vigil. A big candle is lit and from it several other candles are lighted to indicate resurrection. Churches and all areas are illuminated, bells rung and music fills everywhere along with the blissful Easter wish of Hallelujah. Easter is the day of celebration, which begins with the traditional Easter Breakfast with the ‘appam’ made of rice & toddy, along with egg curry and non-vegetarian stews.
