We belong to Syro –Malabar Church. The Syro-Malabar Church is an Apostolic Church which traces its origin to the Apostolate of St. Thomas who, according to the tradition, landed at Malabar Coast (Currently known as Kerala, south coast of India) in 52 AD and founded seven Christian communities. Our Christian tradition is as old as the very beginning of Christianity and the Church is the church born and rooted on Indian soil. The Syro-Malabar Church was known as the Church of the St.Thomas Christians until the 18th century because it was founded by St Thomas, one of the apostles of Jesus Christ. St.Thomas came to India in 52 A.D and died in 72 AD as a Martyr in a place called Mylapore near the present town of Chennai (Madras). His tomb is still venerated there. The Catholic Church is the communion of 22 individual or sui juris Churches. There is one Latin Church (Western Rite) and there are 21 Oriental (Eastern Rite) Churches. All these Churches are in full communion with the Church of Rome, forming the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church. The Syro-Malabar Church is one of the 22 sui juris Oriental Churches in Catholic Communion with its own particular characteristics expressed in worship, spirituality, theology and disciplinary laws and the second largest of the 21 Oriental Churches.
