Veli, Trivandrum
ABOUT
Veli is a beautiful village, with a charming waterfront park and a tourist village. It is located about 10 km from Veli city. There are a number of small shops around the entrance. It consists of a large garden on the southern banks of Veli lagoon. There is a Children’s park and a beautiful grass sculpture of sleeping woman created by Kanayi Kunhiraman. A pond with a huge sculpture of a Conch shell (Sanghu) is the signature landmark of veli . The pond contains fish and plenty of tortoises. On the right side we will find a herd of swans (Arayannams). There is also a pigeon cage with an impressive collection. The giant trees here provide much needed shade and also a nesting place for birds. The 60 metre floating bridge which connects the Veli garden with the Veli beach is very attractive. Boating in the lake is what attracts a large number of tourists visiting Veli. Boating is organised by KTDC and there are 2 boat docks and multiple types of boat rides are offered here. At here there are a number of indoor games and rides suitable for both adults and children. These include a giant wheel, shooting games, darts etc. Horse riding, caricature drawing etc. are some of the other fun things here.
HISTORY
Veli Tourist village is one of the popular tourist spots located at the outskirts of Thiruvananthapuram. Veli Tourist village lies at the spot where Veli Lake is seperated from the Arabian Sea by a sand bar.
SPECIALITIES
The confluence of the lake with the sea is a picturesque picnic spot, named Veli Tourist Village. The charms of the lake can be explored by boat rides. Motor-driven safari launches, powerboats and pedal boats or rowboats can be hired from the Tourist Village. The eastern flank of the lake harbours, two beautiful hillocks, good for hiking. Kayaking and hovercraft ride are also possible. The lake features a floating restaurant and a floating bridge that connects the tourist village with the beach.Veli Beach, golden sand beach with waterfront park, is at a distance of 2 km from Trivandrum International Airport. Visitors can walk through the narrow sandbar at Veli Beach which separates the ocean from the Veli Lake. The park adjacent to the beach comes with different kinds of plant species and art pieces. Veli Beach also offers boat rides, floating bridge, floating restaurant, pony rides and an open-air theater.
CLIMATE
The city has a climate that borders a tropical savanna climate and a tropical monsoon climate. The mean maximum temperature of 34 °C and the mean minimum temperature is 21 °C. The humidity is high and rises to about 90% during the monsoon season.
BEST TIME TO VISIT
Winter season is the best season for a visit to veli. The months when veli is ideal for a trip is for the months of October - March. Monsoon season is also a nice time to visit, while Summers should be avoided, owing to the hostile climate.
