ABOUT
Vizhinjam Rock Cut Cave, a historic spot which was left unseen for a long time. The Rock Cut Caves contains the rock cut sculptures of the 8th century in the cave temple at Vizhinjam in Thiruvananthapuram city. The granite cave encloses a one-celled shrine with a loose sculpture of Vinandhara Dakshinamurthi. The outer wall of the cave depicts half-complete alleviation of the Hindu God Shiva with Goddess Parvathi. Vizhinjam Rock Cut Caves, small unfinished rock carved temple and one of the oldest rock-cut shrines of Kerala.
HISTORY
Vizhinjam Rock Cut Caves is considered to be the smallest rock-cut shrine in Southern India, the Vizhinjam Rock-cut cave is dated to back to 8th century. The shrine has a central cell with an independent sculpture of Dakshinamurthy and on either side of the cell are unfinished sculptures of Siva and Parvathi. It is believed to be one of the earliest rock-cut cave temples in Kerala. This rock cut cave is now a protected monument under the control of the Archaeological Survey of India since 1965.

The other attractions of the area are Vizhinjam Fishing Harbour and Vizhinjam Marine Aquarium. The beach also offers a fine sight of Vizhinjam mosque. In Vizhinjam Marine Aquarium there are fishes like Crabs, Squirrelfish, Clownfish, Moon wrasse, Butterfly fish, Lionfish, Giant turtles, Aggressive surgeonfish, Triggerfish, Deadly piranhas and Sharks. It also has a unique display of pearl images of Christ, Virgin Mary, Hindu Gods and Goddesses and other images.
