Muzhakkunnu Mrithanga Shileshwari Kshetram has a powerful pancha loha idol inside. This is said to be one of the most famous Devi (DURGA) temples in Kerala. Origin of the lady form of KADHAKALI is from Muzhakkunnu temple by Kottayam rajavu. He is the father of kadhakali and wrote the famous vandana sloka “mathanganana mabjavasaram”about this devi. The temple classification revolves round Mridanga, acclaimed to be the mother of all musical instruments, originated in Devaloga or heaven. Devi is presumed to have originated in the form of Mridanga and the consequence of her voice provided the name Muzhakkunnu, the hill that echoes. Mridanga Sailam stands for the drum hill and the Goddess seemed to have appeared on the south eastern premises of the temple. Lord Parasurama captivated the essence of Devi into an idol and founded the temple in Mridanga Sailam or Muzhakkunnu. This is also believed to be the family temple of Veera Pazassirajah. Great Kerala sinham Veera Pazhassi Raja used to offer his prayers to “kuladevatha” here. This temple is one amongst the majour 108 Durga temple built by lord Parasurama.
