Sree Ramaswami temple or commonly known as Thiruvangad temple, dedicated to the Hindu god Sree Rama, is an important temple located in the east part of Thalassery . It is a unique temple because of its legendary and historical significance. The deity in this temple is known as Thiruvangad Perumal. The temple is generally known as the Brass Pagoda from the copper sheeting of its roof. A part of the temple was damaged by Tipu Sultan's troops in the 18th century, but the temple itself is believed to have been saved from destruction. It was one of the outposts of the Thalassery fort in the eighteenth century. In its precincts were held many conferences between the officials of the East India Company and local leaders, at which political treaties and agreements were signed. The idol of the Thiruvangadu Sree Rama Temple is believed to be installed by Lord Parasurama, the great saint. It is one of the five major shrines dedicated to Lord Sree Rama in Kerala. The other four are at Thrinayamkudam (Vaikom), Triprayar, Thiruvilluamala and Kadalur. The annual festival, Vishy Mahotsavam of this temple lasts for 8 days. It starts with the ceremonial flag-hoisting on the day of Meta Samkramam which usually falls on the last day of Meenam, the Malayalam month. The idol of Sri Perumal is taken in a procession on elephant back during festival days around the temple. It is a spectacular event with decorated silk umbrellas and traditional art forms like Panchavadya, and Pandimelam.
